RISC OS Select finally available.

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 08:29, 17/10/2001 | , ,

RO Cog IconIt's caused a great amount of debate since its announcement back in May, but the new version of RISC OS is finally available to subscribers of the Select scheme.

The download is available from the Select portion of the RISCOS Ltd. support site, http://support.riscos.com/Select/. If you're not a subscriber you can still take a peek at the screenshots and change log.

Unregistered user Well done Richard - up before any other portals have it :-)
This is good news, although I wonder when it'll be avaliable for Microdigital/Riscstation machines (or if it works, when it'll be tested). When I talked to Microdigital a couple of months ago, they hadn't heard anything from ROL...

Unregistered user In fact it was on risc os .net yesterday

http://riscos.net/riscos/newsfeature.asp?story=24

I know as I put it there.
But it is a bit of a obscure place i suppose.

Peter.

Unregistered user OK, OK - that'll teach me to check Drobe and riscos.org, and then say The Iconbar was first... especially when I do actually go to the Cybervillage and riscos.net.

Maybe I like The Iconbar so much I'm looking for any reason to praise them :-)

Unregistered user Surely ROL don't have to talk to MD before they write a version for Micos? If I want to write some software I don't contact the company which mankes the computer first. Mind you, an OS upgerade might be a little more tricky, but I assume ROL have all the necessary info.

Unregistered user Perhaps, but it seemed odd that they hadn't heard *anything* from ROL about it. I don't know much about the different RISC OS builds - it is likely to work without modification, or is there zero chance?

Unregistered user ROL shouldn't be writing versions for Micos, RiscStations etc by themselves. At the very least they should be communicating with both companies either to get a machine to test on or to have the companies test, report back, modify the OS etc

As a RiscStation owner I glad I didn't subscribe to Select, and I won't until RISC OS Ltd can prove it'll run on my machine.

Unregistered user Maybe all will become clear at RISC OS 2001. At least you've got all the developers in one room for once ;-)

Unregistered user Horay! The waiting is over. And in time for RISC OS 2001 - great news. RISCOS Ltd should be congratulated. I'm off home to download it, and see what it does to my machine... :-)

And for the record, riscos.org got the news story before anyone else! It's just that I couldn't upload the article via Opera nor IE5... :-p

Unregistered user Yeah, yeah, you guys are *all* wonderful :-)
And don't get me wrong - I think it's fantasic news too. And I'm sure that if versions need to be produced for other machines it can be done quickly. I just can't wait for RISC OS 2001!

Unregistered user Has no one noticed that the RO4 Select logo is a unoriginal and blatent copy of the KDE logo? See www.kde.org for yourself. I wonder how they get away with this?

RISC OS 4+ looks so nice. The race is on to find easter eggs :)

Unregistered user Well as for testing Select on other machines I can see the point, after all its not as though RISC OS Ltd have a Mico, RiscStation and Kinetic so they can test software?.....oh....they do....oh..... so Select doesn't work because they can't be arsed to get the machines out of the cupboard? Mind you perhaps they had to sell them to pay the rent?

John Hoare Message #89239, posted at 09:09, 19/10/2001, in reply to message #89238
Unregistered user Or maybe everyone was getting so impatient about Select, that they thought they would release it as soon as it is ready for vanilla RPC's, rather than wait an extra couple of weeks (missing RISC OS 2001) to get is running on Riscstation, etc.

Unregistered user Will RiscStation and Mico owners have to wait until the *next* CD before they can use Select? That's hardly fair if their subscription runs for the same amount of time.

Unregistered user Actually, I forgot about that. ROL have advertised that there is not currently support for Microdigital/Riscstation (can't remember about Kinetic) so seeing as I'm getting an Omega I haven't subscribed yet ;-)

Unregistered user From the RISC OS 2001 show yesterday

Lee: "So what's the story with with Select and RiscStations?"

Paul Middleton: "Forget it".

I then got another two sentences shifting the blame to Simtec and that was it - I get the impression that Paul may have got grilled in his theatre presentation and I happened to ask the question just after.

Simtec / RiscStation weren't there so I couldn't field the question to them.

Unregistered user hey, if it was all open source, then RiscStation and MicroDigital could fix it themselves to run on their boxes. oh, somebody shut him up and let Pace throw away their IP's future in peace. Pace are co-founders of the embedded Linux steering group, and won't listen to the likes of us blther rant.

Unregistered user I usually get fed up with people slagging off the RISC OS market, but if (and I do say if) that above comment about Riscstations and Select is true, we might as well all give up. That is just *pathetic*.

Unregistered user Well, it actually makes a change PM blaming Simtec/RiscStation. I thought they normally targetted the problems on users, people who say things which indicate that ROS Ltd have lost the plot or basically, people that they don't like. At least now they have *said* it is such a company publically (though no doubt, it was "misquoted" or "out of context" as the two AU articles were) and given that, the company themselves can now take legal action against ROS Ltd for such an unwarrented attack on their good and well respected name.

Ho hum, what comes around, goes around :-)

Unregistered user There's far too much nastiness going round. Individual companies/people - great! But relationships between certain companies/individuals... :-/

If everyone hangs together, and does something, we have a future. If we split off into factions, and argue, there's no future.

I'm at uni at the moment - I hope by the time I've finished, there's some kind of job for me in the RISC OS market. If not, then the UNIX/Linux communities will have to put up with my appalling programming ;-)

Unregistered user The comment is true and the question was one of the reasons I went to the show - I was actually ready to sign up for Select but even if ROS Ltd and Simtec sort out their differences I doubt I'm going to have the confidence in the "establishment" to put my money where my mouth is.

Mind you I suspect I'll be greeted with some level of sceptism and even be flamed on the newsgroups because I feel there are people who don't want to believe that this is happening.
