The Icon Bar: News and features: RISC OS screenshot database launched

RISC OS screenshot database launched

Posted by Andrew Duffell on 10:41, 23/5/2004 | , , ,

Snapshot"I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but there are not many screenshots on the web that show the RISC OS desktop looking good. Most are of RISC OS 3, and seem to show RISC OS in a very dated manner."
The Icon Bar is today launching its screenshot database which hopes to provide a comprehensive set of screenshots showing RISC OS in action. We have started it off with a few shots from Arthur to RISC OS 5, but would like users to send in their screenshots to screenshots@iconbar.com
All versions of RISC OS from Authur to 5 are welcome. All we ask is that you send the image as a unscaled PNG with a text file that contains a description.
Update: Thank you to all that have sent in screenshots.

So there are STILL "not many screenshots on the web that show the RISC OS desktop looking good".

These are horrible. Why do people make a mess of RISC OS like this?

It's interesting that people associate gaudy colours with "modern" looking. It looks awful unless done with class. (Compare Mac OS X with Windows XP). RISC OS Select is a particular offender with its technicolour login screens and banners (what is that StrongARM font they're using?), and that's before the user has chance to fiddle with the button colours!

Select's new button designs don't match with the stone (or if you prefer, mouldy cheese) toolbars. I've always liked the original RISC OS 3 icons for their discreet use of colour and design aids (square icons for files, shaped ones for apps, the Archimedes A for system files), although I quite like the RISC OS 5 ones too.

While other GUIs are getting more and more tarty, I'd like to see RISC OS keeping its simple, refined looks instead of piling on the makeup.

An good icon design is about functionality and accessibility as much as prettiness.

RISC OS 3.5 for ever!!!!!111oneoneone

Seriously though, if we're going to show off RISC OS 'looking good' then it had better be using the default sprite sets. There's not much point showing off a version that you think looks good if 90% of the people viewing it (Or those of the people who the screenshot was taken for) don't know that it's a theme and that it doesn't have to look as ugly as that. Assuming they don't like it, of course ;)

Hi, could someone add the relevant code in the screenshotto urlencode() the picture names that are included on the screenshot pages. I'm having a few issues.

Eg
http://www.iconbar.com/desktop/screenshots/MSN, IRC, and Telnet.png
should be
http://www.iconbar.com/desktop/screenshots/MSN,%20IRC,%20and%20Telnet.png

The best screenshots are those where the desktop has not been specifically arranged for a screenshot.

If you've been working away on your RISC OS box for an hour and then spontaneously take a screenshot, it will look much better than if you opened a few windows in order to take a screenhot.

I agree, subtle icons that fit in with the stonework are better.

RISC OS Select StrongARM RiscPC playing a DVD(using RiscTV), MP3 & MPEG music video

You don't think "playing a DVD" is stretching it a little? Displaying the output from a DVD player is more like it!

Nice to see some reasonable screenshots with some good custom backdrops and icons. I know many like the standard RISC OS tools and sprites and it is true that they are an excellent example of 1990s GUI aesthetics. But it's 2004 now. Styles have changed. What is in is clean looking, minimalistic designs where the window content is the focus. Consistancy is still very important. Something RISC OS was/is always good at.

Alternatively you could enter the Teletubby land of XP. :) The one thing I like about luna is that at least MS tried something different. I'd rather ppl tried new styles than stuck with the same, tired old thing. :)

Everyone back to ROS2 icons!

As long as icons do what they're supposed to do, be bold, simple and indicate their function, and aren't bright colours that distract from the content anything's fine. As long as you don't expect anyone else to be able to use your computer set up.
