This month's news round-up

Posted by fwibbler on 12:46, 20/11/2003 | , , , , , ,

Time for a brief round-up of the news I've missed so far.

RISCOS Ltd have released a patch for RISC OS 4.02 to allow it to use the new toolbox modules currently available from the Support area of the RISC OS Ltd website.

Paul Vigay has released a new version of VZap, an anti-virus program for RISC OS.
Fortunately RISC OS viruses are few and far between, but VZap is capable of detecting and deleting all that are known and can also monitor !Boot and !Run files to make sure that suspicious files aren't loaded automatically, thus helping to detect any new / previously unknown viruses.
This latest version is now 32bit ready and can be obtained from Paul's RISC OS software page.

APDL / ProAction have announced a new special edition of RISCDomain.
For those of you who never read this short lived paper magazine, I can tell you that while it lasted it was an excellent read, packed with a wide variety of interesting and well written articles and well worth the money it cost.
This latest edition appears to be no exception either, the following list being just a few of the articles:

  • Virtually a Risc PC (the details of Virtual Risc PC)
  • Sleuth 3 reviewed
  • Rest in piece (a history of the Risc PC)
  • Does RISC OS have a future? We offer an opinion
  • All you need for the home office
This edition is being made available through an Ebay auction for only £2.99 + £1.00 p&p for individual orders.

Finally, it's good to see that MW Software are making good progress with ROUGPS (RISC OS Universal Graphics Printing System) having just recently achieved a successful print of a test page to a brand new Epson Stylus C84 printer at a genuine 1440dpi.
Latest news can be found at the ROUGPS webpage where you can also help to support this much needed project.

Last time I saw VZap, it didn't detect anywhere near the number of viruses that Pineapple's !Killer did, and a similar number to my own !Slayer. Saying "all known viruses" is dangourous. Known to who? I'm pretty sure most of the viruses that Pineapple's can detect are either extinct, or nolonger in the wild. I spent 3 years collecting virus samples for !Slayer, having people email me copies and all sorts. I'm fairly sure that I got all the ones in the wild.

Unregistered user The new toolbox modules caused problems on my Mico so I had to
undo the change the patch gave.
<fantasy> I wonder if !BOOT can be loaded into VZap to detect
suspicious files after a Boot up grade.

It should be pointed out that VZP is SHAREWARE and hence has a cost: 10 UKP.

I thought Pineapple constantly updated their Virus detect module. I remember downloading the latest version less than a year ago I think.
