After a couple of weeks of tinkering, everyone's favourite RISC OS personality, (no, not Peter Naull's) Paul Vigay, has
released the first beta release of his ROTunes front end for AMPlayer.
"Well, I thought I'd better get around to uploading something people can download", Paul says on his weblog, "Otherwise I'll be playing around with it and tweaking things for weeks. I'm a bit like that."
Since Paul last showed the world a screenshot of ROTunes, he's added a few new things, such as a dual volume control which allows you to quickly switch between two pre-defined volume levels - handy if the phone rings.
As this is a beta release, Paul has asked for any feedback regarding the program, and suggests you read the Help file first so that you know what things are known about and on the todo list. You can see a screenshot of the latest version of ROTunes here.

Yay! And I was thinking that once ROTunes was released, no-one would want to use MyTunes anymore. Nice to know at least one person is still going to use MyTunes (at the moment at least). I'll have to try and pry myself away from my shiny new Mac mini to get a new release out :) |

I have found the verticle scroll bar in ROTunes is offset too far to the right by half its width for some reason. |

OK, read the bit about redraw code.. Then remember that it /is/ a beta version, and that Paul has mentioned the toolsprite width bug many times. Then go sit in the corner and be quiet with a "D" hat on for a while. |

I'm not bothered about it. I was simply pointing out a bug. TBH, I'm not going to use any of these iTunes clones until they do a fair but more than they do at the moment, but they do look very promising. |

I must admit, I don't see what all the fuss is about with these iTunes players. Surely all people want to do is dump a load of MP3s into a player and listen to the music and AMPlayer does that fine. Or am I just being a bit of an old fart again?

I suppose fwibbler, in a way your correct. All we wanna do is dump mp3's in and play. I used to the risc os !AMP (at least think that's the name). However I found it took along time to load the playlist, whereas !MyTunes loads it very quickly. Still needs polishing off, but it works okay. It is now my MP3 player. |

In terms of polishing off MyTunes, v0.07 has the following: bug fixes; better handling of super-long paths; controls which accurately reflect player status; better heuristics if not using ID3 tags; better font handling ensuring track listing should always render properly; logarithmic volume control; ... |

In reply to AndrewD, that's my fault. I have mini toolsprites for my desktop, so I amended the redraw code accordingly. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a way of reading the width of the default toolsprites (I've tried various combinations of SpriteOp with the Rom sprites but to no avail!). I'll probably make it a user-configurable option, but the default will be reset to the standard RISC OS toolsprites rather than my custom ones. v0.03 (nearing release) features improved library indexing, positioning within a track, dual volume controls (useful for a single click to lower volume if phone rings) and a number of other little tweaks! With reference to just playing back MP3s in a directory, sure! The main reason for writing ROTunes was for my own use, as I happen to like the way iTunes works, and allows random play of albums or songs (rather than just sequentially working through a directory). At the end of the day, I'm all for choice, so the more players the merrier! :-)
As it's freeware, it's entirely up to personal preference whether you like it or not :-) |

pvigay: in terms of reading width of toolsprites; you can (IIRC) make two separate calls: one to find the size of the window on screen (including the toolsprites), and another to find the visible work area (excluding the toolsprites). Subtract them and you can find the width and height of the toolsprites. |
