The Icon Bar: News and features: Select 3 features [Updated]

Select 3 features [Updated]

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 15:23, 7/5/2003 | , ,

RISCOS Ltd. have released details of RISC OS Select 3 to The Icon Bar and other RISC OS news agencies. We have put together an article detailing some of the features of this new version of RISC OS.

Highlights include filer thumbnails (with native support of more image formats, like BMPs); recycle bin; writable icon cut 'n' paste; alpha channel sprites (variable levels of masking, and Paint updated to handle this).

Beautiful stuff.

I was dubious about Select at one point, but all this looks lovely. Definitely worth buying. I do hope RO4 and RO5 come together at some point.

Me too, it's almost gut-wrenching to see the Iyonix without all of these wonderful Select 3 features.

Already I can see writable icon cut-and-paste being indispensible.

Indeed. I'd love that on my RiscPC.

Shame I can't afford RISC OS 4, let alone Select :(

Ack! Don't pollute our minds with such foul imagery! ;)

I didn't expect them to use blue for the text selection though; a bit too Windows-ey IMO. I was going to suggest that they should have used red instead, but my memory is playing tricks on me (I thought that red was the colour used by !Edit in mode 12). Must have been getting confused with StrongEd or something :)

Unregistered user The colour of the highlight is configurable. Like the majority of the window manager updates, you can pick any colour you like.

Chris.

How do alpha sprites work on previous version of RO? I presume it just complains? For things like iconsprites (assuming the above) does it look for a different suffix for translucent sprites, plus 3 or something (e.g. !Sprites25) If it doesn't it's going to cause extra, boring coding in the !Boot file of all apps which want to support both.

Woah, deja-vu! Exactly the same was said of RISC OS 4 (256 colour vs. 16 colour icon sprites or something)! It'd be nice if someone has gotten around to sorting this out.

Rich> yeah... we seem to have ended up with horrible hackery in !Boot files, only at least 256 colour sprites work to some extent on all RO, much better than perhaps getting the default icon, or errors, depending on how RO reacts to unknown sprite formats. As things become more configurable etc, things are only going to get more problematical.
