The Icon Bar: News and features: Select 3 released!

Select 3 released!

Posted by fwibbler on 10:12, 20/5/2003 | , , , ,

Eagerly awaited by myself (and many others), the latest version of RISC OS Select is now available for download to all Select subscribers from RISC OS Ltd's website.

With a list of new features as long as your arm plus all the features and improvements from previous Select releases One and Two , this latest one is begining to make OS 4.0x look decidedly dated and barren.

The press release states that although Select 3 was shown running on the Mico, Omega and Alpha at the recent Wakefield computer show (all three machines being as rare as rocking horse doo doo in the big wide world at the moment), users of these machines may encounter various 'issues' with this first release as it has been tested primarily on A7000 and RiscPC machines. These issues should be resolved in a later release of Select and RISC OS Ltd are working with Microdigital to achieve this.

The CD version of Select 3 will be released subject to satisfactory public reception of this (issue 1) release of Select 3.

APDL's offer of a Mico for £399 inc VAT (excluding postage) is vaguely tempting, in some ways - until you realise that to network it, you have to pay extra. I'd just buy a second-hand RPC, or (at a pinch) an R7500 Lite which already has networking.

If you get a second hand RPC you might have to upgrade it to RO4, which costs more. A Mico or RS7500 could be more economical.

As far as I'm aware, there's still no sensible way to network Micos no matter how much you want to pay.

Erk. I just *assumed* there must be a way. In that case, a 2nd hand Riscstation is a sensible option if you're on a budget - if it's a choice between a SA RPC with 3.7 and no network card, or a Riscstation, I think I know which I'd choose.

Mind you, the one I had my eye on at CJE seems to have been bought :-(

Time to save up for an IYONIX...

Unregistered user I personally consider 7500FE based machines to be far too slow for modern useage. Web browsing is painfully slow, even Messenger Pro is sluggish.

I guess it all depends on what you're used to. I could go back to a Standard StrongArm RPC if I had to, but last time I did so, the lack of speed annoyed me.
The RiscStation I have doesn't come close to even a standard SA and hasn't been switched on for some time now.

I'd love a machine with the power of the Iyonix but I suspect too much of my software wouldn't run. More than that, I wish I had the money for one :-(

Cheers!

moss - one question - what pills have you been taking? :-)

For 400UKP you could get a stonking second hand RiscPC with pretty much everything (including networking), and just about have enough left over for Select. tsk :-)

The Mico might be cool if you could get the Lightning card for it, but I'm not sure if it ever came out.

No, it didn't. It was never released.
I've been told that the performance increase it gives would be the same as you would get by running the standard machine in MODE 0.
Cheers!

Presumably it would have given big screen modes too, and lots of colours?

Cheers!
