The
RISC OS.org.uk logo competition is finally ready to take votes. Sorry for the delay, unforseen problems (Christmas, work etc. ;) and all that...
DA Picture has been released as freeware according to
ArcSite. They're actually hosting
the download page too. It's a 24bpp painting package with some nice effects; it doesn't load GIFs (for legal reasons) but coupled with something like
InterGIF it might make a good image editor for websites (better than Paint, cheaper than PhotoDesk).
Nominet has introduced the first new secondary level domain since 1996.
.me.uk domains currently cost around £50 to dissuade timewasters but they're on a sliding scale and will be down to around a fiver by July - if you know a friendly ISP that can register them at cost. And yes, riscos.me.uk is taken.

Isn't the DA program called DA's Picture? (not Paint) |

Yes, it is calles DA's Picture. And it has virtual memory. You can configure it (RAM and Disc space to be used by the program) using the iconbar menu. |

Hmm, I thought with it defaulting to 4MB (or so it says) that wouldn't be virtual memory as it'd have much more than that!
I'll change it... |

Hey, I've been disapointed on every other attempt, I thought I'd get in there first this time. :)
Anyway, I chickened out of posting it in the news item at the last minute, but it seemed like the ideal domain name to use for that free redirection/hosting system we've been muttering about for ages. If anyone has any ideas, now would be a good time... |

Well, people keep asking us about free iconbar.com email addresses, webspace and stuff, which is fair enough but up until now we wanted to keep iconbar.com for serious stuff like the main site maintainers or for helping projects, especially with the old server only having limited resources. However, I've had it in the back of my mind that once the server was upgraded and I could get hold of a new generic RISC OS domain we could try doing some of these things.
I guess email redirection (something@riscos.me.uk -> myrealemail@somewhere.com) and new urls in the form of http://riscos.me.uk/something/ would be fairly easy to set up, it sort of depends if anyone's still interested. |

I really should do the sensible thing and ask more openly rather than mumble about it in the comments of a news posting :) |
