iSV shuts up shop

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:29, 29/6/2001 |

Aaron Timbrell has announced that, after seven years service to the RISC OS community, iSV will no longer be releasing software for the platform.

The cutoff date for orders is 29th June; after that some of their top titles such as DrawWorks and StarFighter 3000 will be made available from APDL. The company will continue to trade under a different name, but will concentrate on Windows database and web products.

Unregistered user I am very sorry to see iSV do this.

This decision must be seen in the context of the abandonment of 32 bit RISC OS, the semi-tragic tale of Omega (if it weren't tragic it would be truely funny), and a general lack of confidence.

Unregistered user Just a few corrections. Firstly we will be releasing further products, only through APDL. The reason for the closure is lack of available time. I will still be in the back room working on RISC OS software, a full version (not an upgrade) of DrawWorks Third Millennium will be the first APDL release. APDL will be taking over the support for RISC OS products as well as the sales. I will handle support for the Windows/web database products for existing users. Or to put it another way, if I send you a press release please try not to distort it for dramatic effect. Sales and support
for RISC OS software will not be affected, it will be done through APDL. Windows users will still be supported through me. I would be most interested if you could refer me to the part of my press release that states that we "..will concentrate on Windows database and web products." As my orginal press release clearly stated I will still be around, pop along to the Bracknell show if you don't believe me, assuming I can afford the petrol :-)

Unregistered user Just a note to wish Aaron well in any new ventures. I've been away from the RISC OS scene myself for a while, but news like this is always saddening (although understandable). iSV have made a tremendous contribution to the market and the community at large.

Unregistered user Aaron, I resent the implication that I sensationalised the story - I merely went on the information given. To quote from your posting:
--------
Support for our Windows database/web products will continue as normal under a new company name. Individual customers will be advised of these details shortly.

We would like to thank all RISC OS customers over the last 7 years for their support and encouragement.
------

And again:

------
Why are you closing?
Simple, I have only so many hours in a day
....
Something has to give and and since I can hand all our RISC OS products to another company and keep continuity it makes sense to close iSV

------

And again

------
Does this mean that your (sic) going to vanish?
No. I will continue to edit RISC World magazine, and will still be at shows, only I will be on the APDL stand.

------

Sounds like a goodbye to me, at no point do you say that you will release any new products, only that you will edit a magazine. The wording used says that iSV is closed, not merely moving to a new home.

The fact that you don't have enough time to continue with iSV but can support Windows stuff by starting an entirely new company (in name at least) suggests that you're concentrating on the Windows side of things.

I suggest that if you want the news reported more accurately that you actually include the information in your press release.

Unregistered user The press release in full, so people can make up their own minds:
--------------------------------------------------

To all our customers,

Just to let everyone know that as from the 29th of June iSV Products will be closing its doors. We will not be accepting any orders or technical support requests for RISC OS products after this date. Our accounting system will continue to run until all outstanding customer accounts are cleared.

Sales of all our RISC OS products, including DrawWorks and StarFighter, will continue through APDL (http://www.apdl.co.uk). APDL will also be handling all RISC OS technical support enquires for our range of products. APDL have an increasing large market presence, and our products compliment their existing range, which includes Ovation, Sleuth and Masterfile, to name but three.

Support for our Windows database/web products will continue as normal under a new company name. Individual customers will be advised of these details shortly.

We would like to thank all our RISC OS customers over the last 7 years for their support and encouragement.

To prevent the usual newsgroup guessing game here are the answers to the questions that are likely to get asked.

Why are you closing?
Simple, I have only so many hours in a day. Running iSV, our other companies, as well as editing RISC World magazine means I have little spare time. Something has to give and since I can hand all our RISC OS products over to another company and keep continuity it makes sense to close iSV. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, a number of factors have come into play. Not least of these is the editorial independence of RISC World.

Does this mean your going to vanish?
No. I will continue to edit RISC World magazine, and I will still be at shows, only I will be on the APDL stand.

What about your e-mail address?
The current AOL e-mail address will continue. However any iSV related mail sent to this address will not get an answer. Instead e-mail to info@apdl.co.uk. The atimbrell@aol.com address can still be used for RISC World mail and other matters.

What are you going to do now?
Have a break.

Many thanks

Aaron (ISV Products)

Unregistered user In response to the comment that this news shows a lack of confidence, i have to say that that sort of thinking is precisely why projects like Omega have trouble once started. We need to say positive things, not promote the idea of a drop in confidence! Good luck to you Aaron! Keep developing. I use drawworks for lots of school work, I love it, and I've only got designer edition! Typography 2100 is great too. The CD is always nearby the computer! The tide will turn against the evil Microsoft one day.

Unregistered user You have to bear in mind that he has ensured that his products are actively developed. Running a business is hard, if iSV was too much of a time constraint it's no wonder why he ditched it. He does need to make a living the best way he can. However, I do admit that maybe this was not the best course of action, and that a more gradual/accomodating 'closure' would be better, but it was his decision.

Unregistered user Well done. I think it is a good thing to have a well known 'vendor/support' as APDL is, and from other side Aaron Timbrell will have more time to dedicate to his projects.
Sometime is better to have the two things separated (tech stuff and marketing). Acorn itself used to have the best technology and the worse marketing, and you see what's happened!!

The reason ISV (what stupid name for a company as ISV stands for Independent Software Vendor, what mext a Chinese monitor company called "Monitor", graphics card company called VGA or are they all Rempoly, real examples) is because Aaron Timbell is a JEW. Therefore to avoid anti-semitism he has decide to have David Holden answer ISV's (e)mail. Dr Hermen Hauser banned jews from working with Acorn and Acorn Dealers. With Acorn temparely gone Aaron can now make an agreement with APDL to access Acorn hardware etc.

Is David Holden a Jew?
----------------------
APDL already sold Hebrew software (Dr Hauser said that he would stop Hebrew from being on RISC OS). David Holden has a beard, but seems not to be a jew. Will Aaron give him a copy of the Old Testament?

It's nice to see RISC OS' favourite euroseptic, right-wing populist and UKIP canditate, Tarquin Mills is back. Please tell us Tarquin, how did the lawsuit turn out? (http://www.drobe.co.uk/riscos/artifact1543.htm)

I hear the legal bill was quite substantial.

Hypothesis refuted: it is possible for levels of batshit insanity to exist above and beyond that exhibited by Tarquin Mills when last observed befouling RISC OS fora.

Looking at the IP address the account was used from, it resolves to an NTL customer in Norwich, which is consistent with it actually being Tarquin. So yes, he will resort (and if you look at the URLs in Peter's post, has resorted) to this kind of childish trolling.

Despite the filth that's come out of his keyboard in this (and the other) thread, I do so love a good, old-fashioned Internet mental! Does it still count as trolling if they're genuinely mentally ill, though?

Either way, I think this document officially wins the Internet:
