Posted by Andrew Duffell on 16:34, 2/9/2005 | , , , ,

Iyonix cubes demoIcon Bar regular, Simon Wilson has contacted us to let us know that the 3D driver and OpenGL API for the Iyonix that he has been developing is now available.

It is currently located at a temporary location until Simon moves it to the Iyonix website.

All the info is on the website, and it will be updated in a couple of days with more info and some screenshots.

Update: A demo is now available on Simon's site.

So Castle are planning to update the graphics card? Maybe they can't get any GeForce 2 cards now.

Is there any sign of a replacement XScale chip that does PCI-E? If one existed would it be likely to be able to support graphics cards?

There are quite a few PCI-Express capable XScale variants available like the IOP333 - which has the added benefit of a vastly faster internal bus and can access faster DDR-RAM.

Will a version of this be able to work on the A9home, when commercially released?

The A9home uses a very much simpler chipset that only provides acceleration for 2D operations such as filling and copying rectangles, not the 3D transformations, texture rendering and lighting/shading calculations performed by the nVIDIA chipset.

I believe the Mesa port provides a software implementation for each of these stages, so it should certainly work on the A9home, but it'd likely be no more than 50% faster than the previously-available Mesa port was on a StrongARM RiscPC.

Having said that, it would appear that the weak link with Simon's new library on the IYONIX pc is the use/implementation of software floating point and any improvements in that area will benefit the A9home (and SA RPC) also.

What Adrian said. ;o)

Castle are looking into upgrading the graphics card, but I don't know how supplies of the original GeForce 2 card are looking. There are plenty available on the web still.

I've just uploaded a new version of IyonixMesa with red/blue swapping in place. Enjoy!
