Finally, RISCOS Ltd and Castle Technology have agreed to co-operate on future RISC OS development. Negotiations on a new licence agreement have recently concluded, and will enable RISC OS 4 and 5 to be merged together "as soon as practically possible". This ends worries that application developers would have to support two diverging operating systems.
Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd said that the Select Desktop experience will be available for Iyonix users next year. Castle's Jack Lillingston said "I know that this sets sound foundations for a bright new future of RISC OS."
Castle will continue with the Iyonix PC and other desktop products, whilst Tematic will focus on the embedded market. RISC OS 4 will continue to be available for the forseeable future, and all RISC OS hardware and software developers will continue to supply their products. Meanwhile, Castle and RISC OS Ltd will establish clear areas of responsibility to minimise duplication of effort.

Good news overall. I doubt if Castle and ROL will merge, the important thing is that there is an *agreed* path forward. From an end user perspective that's a good thing. I note that from the press release Jack Lillington says (and I quote) "Castle will continue with the IYONIX pc and other desktop products" The commitment is a good one and if the inference is that there will be *other* desktop products too then that's as big news as the announcement itself. The Sooner The Better they are doing this.
Because RISC OS Select SUCKS.
I had more possibilities with RISC OS 4.02 then i
have now with RISC OS 4.39 Select 3 issue 4.
RISC OS 5 is still handling the universal !Boot sequence,
while RISC OS 4.39 is not anymore, quite a HUGE shame is that !!!
For instance, i cannot read my scsi media anymore with RISC OS 4.39
And with RISC OS 3.10 up to RISC OS 4.02, i had no problems at all with it. |

As it happens, after the last time (mentioned above) I had a reply from both John @ Castle and Steve @ ROOL, so I can stop trying to pester them into taking notice.
The suggestion by Steve was to bring the subject up on the ROOL forums when they're up and running again - and I've just looked, and they have been for a couple of weeks, so I'd better get on and do that, then!
