Steel Cobra

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 21:42, 10/2/2003 | , , , ,

Steel CobraIt was a toss-up whether this one went up on Acorn Arcade or here, but it might make an amusing antidote to all the heavy GPL mass debates. Jason Tribbeck, more famous for writing games for use in the virtual world, has decided to bring his gaming skills into the real world for his latest project, the Steel Cobra.

After a discussion about making paper models of Elite ships using designs from Witchspace and Sirocco Station, Jason decided to take things a little further... The partially finished result on display so far is a framework of steel strips, which not so coincidentally looks very much like the old 8-bit wireframe Elite model except without the hidden line removal. Jase is currently working on the electronics, and when the new sheet steel arrives it'll be fully covered.

To keep an eye on this project as it happens, head on over to Jason's website, www.tribbeck.com.

Will this be flashy-lighty type electronics, or will it actually fly? :o

Stick a mini jet engine from an RC place in there and it'll really go :o

Blinkenlights only I'm afraid, although a second model is being planned that will fly. It won't be made from whacking great lumps of steel though ;)

I went through a period of watching far too much TVX - The Fantasy Channel. I accidentally guessed the PIN, and bought some porn each month; and pretended to my mother that 'TFC Buy' on the bill stood for The Film Channel...

Oddly enough, the standard pin was 11234. So it was pretty easy :-)

On Sky Digital, the pin number is, by default, the last four digits of the viewing card number unless you have changed it from what I remember.

Well, she never saw it. I left a tape in overnight, and just hoped she didn't try to use the video recorder before I did in the morning.

Anyway the most exciting part about this is the rumour of a flying version -surely not :-0

Unregistered user A kite version would satisfy the "flying" criteria without Paul Vigay getting all excited, but generous use of steel kind of rules that out.

The flying one won't be made of steel. It'll probably be plastic and balsa.

Neither of which take welding too well ;-)
